Upper Midwest Bass Challenge anglers take on Lake Mohawksin
Limits caught by most, weights average
Due to the northern smallmouth bass season not being open, the tributaries connecting to Lake Mohawksin were off limits to those looking for smallmouth. But the main lake, which is under what is called "River Rules," was open to both largemouth and smallmouth.
At the end of the day, it seemed all of the anglers chose to target smallmouth on the main lake, with 153 of them brought to the scales. No largemouth were brought in on the day.
Most reported the spawn was done. Anglers found many smaller fish, most of them quite skinny after their spawning ordeal. However, there were some bigger fish that came to the scales as well. The bite was difficult and many reported dismal pre-fishing results.
Eleven teams weighed a fish over three pounds vying for big bass. The largest was 3.81, brought in by the team of Andy Dassow and Todd Holtman. This duo is one of many who always bring the competition to a new level. They also won the day with a total of 14.67 pounds in their five fish limit.
Second place went to another team tha historically has done well in any tournament they enter. The team of Yeng Thao and David Vue were able to boat 14.18 pounds of smallmouth to bring to the scales.
Robin Pester and Kacey Meyer have made their way around the tournament scene and are stout anglers in their own right.
Their 13.97 pound bag of smallmouth landed them securely in third place.
When the scales closed, it would take almost 12 pounds to get a top-10 finish in this UMBCS event. Twenty-nine of the 34 teams involved were able to bring in a five fish limit. The 153 fish caught came to a total of 341.35 pounds, meaning the average weight was just over 2.2 pounds.
The next stop of the Central Division for the UMBCS will be on Sunday, June 25 on Boom Lake. The weigh-in will start at the Hodag Park boat landing at 3 p.m. The public is welcome to stop by and watch the weigh in. This tournament promises to see some big smallmouth and also some great largemouth come across the scales. More information about the Upper Midwest Bass Challenge Series can be found on their Facebook page. There are three divisions under the UMBCS umbrella, all run by Gregg Kizewski of St. Germain.
