Too many free bases came back to haunt Rhinelander's Northwoods Babe Ruth Senior League team at home Tuesday night as they dropped a non-league game to Prentice, 10-8, at Stafford Field.

Rhinelander lost despite doubling up Prentice 10-5 in the hit column. The Bucs drew three bases-loaded free passes in the second inning and scored three in the fourth without the aid of an RBI thanks to a pair of passed balls and a wild pitch.

The Hodags trailed 10-5 in the fifth but rallied to make things interesting and, ultimately, left the bases loaded with the winning run aboard in the seventh. Ryley Hull walked and scored after Prentice misplayed a pickoff attempt of Zack Webster at first in the fifth inning. Josh Willoughby hit a two-run single to cut the lead to 10-8 in the sixth.

Mason Schmidt singled in the seventh while Declan Adams walked and Hull was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs, but Aden Flannery grounded out to first base, ending the threat.

After giving up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, the Hodags got them back in the bottom half of the frame. Hoyt Dantoin walked and scored on a Willoughby groundout. Tyler Chariton doubled in the inning and scored when Prentice misfired on a pickoff attempt at third.

The Bucs took control with three in the second as Rhinelander pitcher Chandler Servent walked four batters, hit another and allowed a single in the inning. Prentice tacked on one more in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Schmidt doubled and scored on a passed ball for the Hodags in the second and Rhinelander added two in the fourth as Servent singled home Chariton and Willoughby singled and scored on an error.

Chariton went 3-for-3 with a double on the night for Rhinelander, Willoughby, Servent and Schmidt added two hits each for the Hodags.

Servent took the loss, allowing six runs on three hits with seven walks and five strikeouts over three innings. Johnny Turek pitched the final four innings, giving up four runs on two hits with six walks and seven strikeouts.

Tuesday's loss followed a 24-1 defeat in league play Monday night at Crandon for the Hodags. Rhinelander scored first in that contest as Willoughby singled and came around when Asher Rivord was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

It was all Crandon from there, however, as that proved to be Rhinelander's only hit. Crandon took the lead with three in the bottom of the first, scored twice in the second and added three in the third. The Cardinals scored 16 times in the fourth to blow the game open.

Chariton, Schmidt, Adams, Hull, Jack Turek and Flannery all saw time on the mound in the loss for Rhinelander.

The Hodags (1-2) faced Lakeland Wednesday in a game that concluded after press time for today's edition and will have a rematch with Crandon this coming Monday night at Stafford Field.

Prep Leaguers edge Lakeland

Rhinelander's 13-year-old Prep League team improved to 4-1 on the season, rallying past Lakeland 9-6 Tuesday night in Minocqua. The Hodags, who relinquished an early 5-0 lead, jumped back in front with a three-run sixth inning and tacked on an insurance run in the seventh.

Johnny Baker walked, Dylan Webster singled and Henry Schmitz doubled in the sixth and all three came around to score in the frame as Rhinelander jumped back in front 8-6. Brayden Dervetski singled and scored on a Tommy Eades double in the seventh.

Rhinelander scored twice in the first as Blake Bauer singled and scored on an Eades double. Eades came around on a Vince White single. Those three came through for Rhinelander again in the third as Bauer singled and scored on a Eades double. White then hit an RBI triple and scored on a Baker single.

Lakeland tied the game with a five-run third inning and took the lead scoring a run in the fourth.

The Hodags pounded out 12 hits in the game, including three doubles by Eades. Bauer and White had two hits each in the game.

Pitching statistics were not provided.

Rhinelander hosted Tomahawk-1 on Thursday in a game that concluded after press time for today's edition. The team's next contest is Thursday, June 22 at Crandon.
