The Hodags scored in every inning except the fourth in a game that was called in the sixth inning after reaching the league's 2-hour time limit.
The Hodags broke a six-all tie with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, despite only collecting two hits in the frame. Trevor Denton walked, Brayden Dervetski was hit by a pitch, Michael Brunette had a single and Isaac Cosma walked to bring up the top of the order. Jackson West added an RBI single in the inning.
Vince White and Johnny Baker had singles for the Hodags in a two-run first inning. Denton and Dervetski both doubled in a three-run second while Douglas Hartmann walked and scored a run. Blake Bauer was hit by a pitch and eventually scored as Rhinelander led 6-2 after three innings. Phillips tied the game with a four-run fourth inning that featured seven walks.
Rhinelander used five different pitchers on the mound, with White getting the win. He pitched the final two innings, allowing no runs on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Hartmann pitched the first inning for Rhinelander, giving up a run while striking out three. Bauer pitched a scoreless second. Henry Schmitz gave up a run in the third and Tommy Eades threw the fourth for Rhinelander.
West, White, Baker, Denton, Dervetski and Brunette all collected hits as the Hodags outhit the Loggers 6-4.
The win moved Rhinelander to 2-1 in Prep League play. The 13-year-old team lost its opener 11-5 at Tomahawk-1 and edged Crandon 12-11 on May 30. The team was scheduled to play at Eagle River Thursday in a game that concluded after press time. The Hodags will travel to Lakeland on Tuesday.
Senior Leaguers open with win
Tyler Chariton hit a home run as part of a six-run third inning, which helped power Rhinelander past Eagle River-3 9-2 in the Senior League opener Monday night in Eagle River.
Chariton's two-run shot capped off the inning for the Hodags, who led wire-to-wire in the contest.
Chariton was hit by a pitch and scored for Rhinelander in the first inning. Riley Hull tripled and scored on a Zach Webster groundout in the second. Mason Schmidt cleared the bases with a double in the third inning after Asher Rivord, Jack Turek and Declan Adams reached base. Josh Willoughby doubled in Baker before Chariton's two-run shot. Rhinelander tacked one more run in the seventh as Willoughby singled and later scored on a wild pitch.
Adams started a pitched three innings for the Hodags, allowing an unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts. Chandler Servent pitched the fourth and fifth, giving up a run on a hit with two strikeouts. Schmidt worked the final two innings scoreless, allowing a hit while striking out two.
The Hodags got five hits in the game - two from Willoughby and one each by Chariton, Hull and Schmidt.
Rhinelander (1-0) faced Eagle River-2 at home Wednesday in a game that concluded after press time. The Hodags will head to Crandon on Monday and host Prentice in a non-conference contest on Tuesday.
