RHS sports recap: Thursday, June 1
Ava Lamers scored in the 43rd minute, which was just enough as the Rhinelander High School girls' soccer team got past Medford 1-0 to open the WIAA tournament Thursday night at Mike Webster Stadium.
Lamers scored after the ball came free in the box following a Sophie Miljevich corner kick. The Hodags outshot Medford 23-5 in the contest. The Raiders managed only two shots on goal, both of which were stopped by Rhinelander's Mya Krouze.
The start of Thursday's game was delayed by roughly 30 minutes due to lightning.
The Hodags (13-5-0, 8-2-0 Great Northern) will travel to second-seeded Lakeland in the regional finals on Saturday night. The T-Birds defeated Mosinee 2-0 on Thursday.
Boys' tennis: Rhinelander at WIAA state tournament
Rhinelander's Joey Belanger and Layne Roeser won their opening match at the WIAA state tournament in Madison on Thursday.
The Hodag pair defeated Franklin's Julian Beckmann and Aidan Irish 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the tournament. They are set to face 15th-seeded Conner Pallan and Cole Neinas of Germantown in the round of 32 Friday morning.
Full reports will be published in Tuesday's River News.
