Charles Irvin Wilmot passed away on July 19, at his family cabin in the Harrison Hills. Charlie was born July 13, 1944, to Irvin and Linda (Wade) Wilmot. He graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1962, and attended Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. He married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Anderson, on August 28, 1965, and in 1967 he graduated with a degree in metallurgical engineering from Michigan Tech.

Charlie’s first job took him to McGill, Nevada, where he worked for Kennecott Nevada Copper. His two sons, Paul and John, were born during this time and the friendships Sandy and Charlie made here lasted throughout his lifetime. This job was followed by stints in Wisconsin and Nevada. Always generous and gracious hosts, Sandy and Charlie worked together to surround themselves with friends wherever they lived.

In 1990, Charlie took a position in West Papua, Indonesia with Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold. This gave him and Sandy the opportunity to travel the world, where he was able to explore his passions for fishing, hiking, and exploring. He retired from Freeport in 1999 and returned to Elko, Nevada where his sons, and four grandchildren were living. Sandy and Charlie fully embraced their role of grandparents and were as present and active in their grandchildren’s lives as time and distance allowed.

Charlie flunked retirement several times, and after returning to the United States in 1999 he continued his career with Kennecott Utah Copper in Salt Lake City, followed by the development of a private consulting company that took him to Canada, Bolivia, and other mines in the United States. When time allowed, Sandy would join him on his journeys, and they shared many memories of their travels together.

Following his final retirement about ten years ago, Charlie and Sandy finally had time to spend their summers in Wisconsin, where they reconnected with family and old friends. The rest of the year was spent at their mountain home in Spring Creek, Nevada, where family and friends were always welcome, and they were active in the Lamoille community and Lamoille Community Presbyterian Church.

A visitation for Charles will take place on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at the Carlson Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to noon.  You may leave your private condolences for the Wilmot family at www.carlsonfh.com. The Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414) is handling the arrangements for the Wilmot family.
