Babe Ruth: Senior Leaguers end season with 14-6 loss
Rhinelander’s Northwoods Babe Ruth Senior League team closed out its 2023 season Monday night with a 14-6 loss at home to Eagle River-1.
The Hodags had to play catchup from the onset, after spotting Eagle River three runs in the top of the first. The Eagles led 10-3 after three innings and cruised the rest of the way.
Rhinelander had just three hits on the night, but all contributed to runs. Chandler Servent hit an RBI double in the first inning. Johnny Turek legged out an infield hit to lead off the fourth and later scored on a overthrow following a stolen base attempt. Declan Adams had an RBI single in the seventh.
The Hodags closed to within 3-2 after the first, with Servent’s double capping off a two-run frame. Mason Schmidt led off with a walk, got to third when Johnny Turek reached on an error and scored on a groundout by Adams. Servent’s double plated Turek.
Eagle River scored five in the second, answered only by a single Hodag run in the frame. Hoyt Dantoin walked, got to second on a wild pitch and third on a passed ball before Asher Rivord scored him with a groundout.
The Eagles added two runs in the third, one in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh. Jack Turek walked and scored on a throwing error for Rhinelander in the fifth.
The Hodags used seven different pitchers in the game. Schmidt started and took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits in the first. While he struck out the side, he also had a pair of walks. Servent also struck out the side in the second, but had five walks and gave up two hits in a five-run frame.
Johnny Turek gave up two runs on a hit with three walks and a strikeout in the third. Tyler Chariton pitched a perfect fourth with a pair of strikeouts, Jack Turek gave up two runs on three hits with four walks and a strikeout over two innings.
