After seeing back-to-back dual meets canceled or postponed due to low numbers, the Hodags finally got back in action Saturday in the Julie Langseth Memorial in Antigo.
It was Rhinelander's first competition since competing Jan. 7 in Wisconsin Rapids. The Hodags had only two gymnasts available for the meet, taking last in the 10-team field.
"The last few weeks have been slow going with a mix of injury recovery, illness, canceled practices due to weather, and a canceled meet," coach Kristina Aschenbrenner told the River News. "Due to lack of practices we haven't been able to compete the new skills the girls have been working on."
Sophomore Wendy Fronk was the only of the two to compete in all four events Saturday as senior Leta Cole scratched from the floor exercise as she works her way back from an ankle injury.
Fronk finished 24th in the all-around with a score of 25.75 points. Her best finish came on balance beam, where she took 35th with a 6.6. She earned a 7.0 on floor exercise and a 7.7 on the vault.
Cole's best finish of the day was 37th on beam (6.15).
Aschenbrenner noted that Fronk had a strong, clean vault and a nice, clean floor routine, Cole hit every skill in her routine on uneven bars and both completed their skills on balance beam while having one fall each.
"Both Wendy and Leta each have a couple skills they have been working on, we might see Tuesday or at our next meet after that," Aschenbrenner said.
Aschenbrenner noted that the team is currently down to three gymnasts - Fronk, Cole and first-year junior Leighann Hoople, "who joined the team this year without any previous gymnastics experience, who will be competing soon as well," Aschenbrenner said.
Rhinelander postponed a GNC Small dual against Antigo Jan. 17 due to low numbers. Additionally, a GNC Large-Small crossover against Wisconsin Rapids Jan. 23 was canceled. Aschenbrenner also noted the team will nix the Feb. 4 Marshfield Invite from its docket "due to some scheduling conflicts."
The team will compete tonight at home against Lakeland in a GNC Small dual meet. Because of the previous schedule changes, it will be the team's senior night, parents' night and YMCA youth night. The meet gets underway at 5:45 p.m. in the Hodag Dome.
