The vote took place on Monday, Feb. 20 following the recommendation of district superintendent Eric Burke.
"Even before the Hodag Dome was fully operational there was a high level of interest from sports enthusiasts and organizations from outside our district about the potential use of the facility," Burke wrote in a memo to the school board recommending the addition of an event coordinator. "Since opening and through this upcoming spring the Dome has been or will be host to nearly 50 events and/or tournaments of these outside organizations. These activities are above and beyond the district sponsored sports and activities, each of which require time and resources to coordinate as well as host. The initial scheduling with an outside organization may span several weeks with multiple phone calls or emails as well as a potential visit to check out the facility in advance of booking. Once scheduled, the party requesting use is responsible for promoting the event, however Dome and district personnel are responsible to ensure the necessary equipment setup is complete in a timely manner and that the guests are aware of expectations. Although Dome personnel are present for the duration of the event/tournament, the dome manager is also typically present as the event begins and at the conclusion to address any unmet needs or concerns of the event. As we enter into the third full year of Dome operations we recommend the hiring of an event coordinator who can serve as the primary point of contact for the requests from these outside organizations."
According to the memo, the event coordinator would work under the direction of Dome manager Janet Jamison and would be responsible for the scheduling, preparation and oversight of the events or activities being held by an outside organization.
This position would be specific to the school year (September through May) at approximately 25 hours per week. The suggested rate of pay is $18 to $22 per hour depending on experience.
In introducing the resolution during the board's Feb. 20 meeting, Burke praised Jamison and explained that she is being stretched thin.
"Janet needs some help," he said. "She can't be at everything every night and every weekend so we want to find someone to provide some support."
The district's operations and strategic planning committee unanimously approved the addition of the position, according to committee chairman David Holperin.
"The Dome continues to do extremely well, with more programming, more visitors," he said. "It's a fabulous addition to our district."
