Rhinelander Historical Society to present Hops N' History Event on March 9

The Rhinelander Historical Society will present its fourth Hops N' History event at the Rhinelander Brewing Co. Tap Room (43 S. Brown St.) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 9. The topic of this event will be Alaska, Ho! From Northern Wisconsin to the Matanuska Valley in 1935, organizers said in a press release.

Admission is free and the public is welcome to join in a relaxing and informative evening.

Matt Blessing, retired State Archivist & Division Administrator at the Wisconsin Historical Society, will present a program on Matanuska Valley relocation project, including families from the Rhinelander area. In 1935, over 200 families from the northern regions of Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota took advantage of a Homestead program relocating them to the Matanuska Valley of Alaska. In the midst of the great depression, an offer for 40 acres of land and a new life was enough to uproot many Midwest farm families.
