Standing-room only and smiles stretching wall to wall; that was the scene at ArtStart recently when awards were announced for a K-8 writing contest sponsored by Rhinelander Woman's Club. This is the fifth year the club has recognized students who anxiously displayed their creative talents for all to see. Each year visitors may read and enjoy the students' work.

Ninety entries represented public, parochial, and home-schooled students. Short stories and poetry were accepted from teachers and parents in grade categories; K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. A reception was held to distribute ribbons, certificates, and special monetary awards. Culver's generously donated an ice cream token to every participant.

"We know Rhinelander has talented students, and we want them to have a venue to express their creative thoughts in the written arts," contest chairperson Cindy Goll said in a press release announcing the contest results "A pair of third grade brothers told me they would write again next year and maybe even do illustrations. Comments like that say mission accomplished!"

Receiving honorable mention awards were: (K-2) Sophia Taylor, "Mekah's Day," Brielle Calhoun, "Squirrel Friends," (3-5) Kisa Zwiers, "Saharah the Cat," Simon Katzke, "The Big Fish," Helen Beuning, "What Is Joy?" (6-8) Alexis Beran, "El Musico," Riley Pappas, "The Yacumama."

Third place winners were: (K-2) Felicia Slack, "The Birthday Surprise," (3-5) Quinn Williams, "Creatureton Party," Elizabeth Eades, "A Winter's Walk," (6-8) Kaiden Hurlbutt-Ames, "Snow in Eagle Pass," Hailey Perry, "All about God."

Those receiving second place awards were: (K-2) Samuel Beuning, "The Trip," (3-5) Kylor Theisen, "thispersondoesnotexist.com," Urban Beuning, "A Little Star," (6-8) Elsie Wilson, "The Duende," Wyatt Peters, "Hockey."

First place winners earn the opportunity to have their writing entered in the General Federation of Women's Clubs - Wisconsin Youth Writing Contest, which is held in May at a GFWC state convention.

These students are: (K-2) Marshall Kurtz, "Turkeys on a Mission," (3-5) Alaina Aylesworth, "Man in Black," Nora Foat, "Wintertime," (6-8) Riley Jae Johnson, "The Duende," Hailey Novak, "Two to Make One."

"Good luck to the five local finalists! Thank you to students, teachers, parents, and club members. We hope to sponsor the writing contest again in 2024, so keep those pencils and pens in motion!" said GFWC Rhinelander Woman's Club president Christy Schneider. "Short stories and poetry written January 1, 2023 - December 31, 2023, will be eligible to enter in January 2024."
