The top vote-getter was Petra Pietrzak with 281 votes. Scott Ridderbusch received 205 votes and Bradley White finished with 134 votes.
Nick Vos and Steve Machiechok each earned 127 votes, prompting the tiebreaker.
There were six names on Tuesday's ballot but the incumbent, Jim Staskiewicz, resigned from the town board on Feb. 9, a day after he was arrested by deputies with the Oneida County sheriff's office in connection with an election fraud and misconduct in public office investigation tied into his re-election effort.
Despite that, Staskiewicz managed to pick up 80 votes.
Town clerk Kim Gauthier said Wednesday she was working on the details for the process to do a tie-breaker between Vos and Machiechok to determine which of the two will advance to the April 4 general election.
"Never in my 12 years as clerk have we even needed to have a primary," she said.
Oneida County clerk Tracy Hartman said once a board of canvassers is convened and the tie verified, a coin toss or name drawing will probably be used to determine whether Vos or Machiechok advances.
"Once a candidate is declared the winner, then the other candidate will still have the right to request a recount to make sure the vote total is accurate," she added.
