Actively Aging Balance Training offered at Y
Sykes has over 40 years of experience working with individuals to improve their motor skills and rehab from injuries or surgery, according to a press release announcing the training.
Level 1 class is designed to educate and help participants learn basic balance exercises and develop a home program for all participants that is successful in maintaining and improving their balance skills.
Level 2 class will advance upon the skills gained in Level 1 and will focus on balance reactions and strategies in order to prevent falls. Both programs are designed for healthy older adults without a strong history of falls ie.less than 3 falls over the past year and who are not receiving any skilled therapy for falls.
Level 1 and Level 2 will consit of a number of basic balance exercises, progressive in nature, with an emphasis on safety and proper technique. Pre- and post- testing will be performed based on stardardized testing. And participants will be given a home exercise program for practice, progressing, and improvement.
The six-week session begins on Monday, March 13. Level 1 will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 1-2 p.m. in the aerobic studio. Level 2 will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Programs are free to Y members and $50 for the general public. Space is limited and registration is required.
