Alpine Skiing: RHS/NPHS boys 9th/10, WIARA state meet

Senior Tommie Jo Springer won the WIARA girls' skiing individual state championship on Monday in La Crosse, the highlight for the Rhinelander/Northland Pines Alpine ski team at the state meet.

Springer, who had won giant slalom and slalom on Sunday, completed a clean sweep by taking Super G on Monday to capture the overall state crown by seven points over Payton Bradford of Divine Savoir Holy Angels. Springer is the first individual state skiing champion in program history.

The meet did not go as well for the RHS/NPHS boys' squad, which was hindered by a number of spills and slow results in a ninth place finish out of 10 Division 2 programs at state. Lukas Bishop was the top-placing Hodag, taking 55th overall out of 157 skiers who competed over the weekend. Jason Linn was 58th, Brandon Bacon finished 63rd, Ben Olson was 75th, Brody Kowieski was 101st and Riley Zarm finished 126th.

Boys' basketball: D.C. Everest 73, Rhinelander 42

The RHS boys' basketball team fell behind early and could never recover against a hot-shooting D.C. Everest squad as it fell 73-42 Monday night at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.

Rhinelander shot just 3 of 19 from the field in the first half as the Evergreens build a 36-6 lead at the break. Overall, Everest finished just over 74% from the field on the night, shooting 29 of 39.

Will Gretzinger scored 20 points, all in the second half to lead Rhinelander. Marcus Hall had 22 points to lead D.C. Everest.

Rhinelander (7-15, 5-6 Great Northern) closes the regular season at Tomahawk Thursday night.
