RHS/NPHS snowboarders take 7th at state

The Rhinelander/Northland Pines boys' snowboard team had a mixed day on the snow Saturday as it finished seventh out of 10 teams at the WIARA state championships in La Crosse.

Coach Rod Olson said his Northern Conference-champion Hodags did not have the speed to reel in some of the schools from the southeastern portion of the state, but his team did not have a clean day, either.

"Hartford and Slinger were good and had some good individuals and Callaway from La Crosse was awesome, but we didn't do well," he said. "We were hanging around seventh with some marred runs, but talent-wise I think we should have been around fifth."

Hartford edged Slinger by 12 points for the overall title with West Bend, Waukesha and Aquinas/Onalaska/West Salem (AOWS) rounding out the top five. Bodie Callaway from AOWS won slalom and GS, and was second in boardercross to take the individual overall title.

Senior Max Durkee was Rhinelander's top finisher, taking 13th in a field of 67 boarders. His best run of the day was a 14th-place finish in boardercross to start the morning. He was 17th in giant slalom and 19th in slalom.

"Max had glitches in every run," Olson noted. "He went down in slalom, got back up and he was super fast after that. Where he finished in slalom was awesome because he was down on the snow for a while."

Resse Frisque finished 32nd, Owen Repenshek was 33rd, Brady Frisque was 37th, Trevyn Rappley was 41st and Even Sievwright, boarding in place of the injured Isaiah Willoughby, was 45th. Repenshek had the best event finish out of that group, taking 29th in slalom.

"Owen had some bobbles in boardercross and GS didn't go well either," Olson said. "Without Isaiah, that was tough. We had to move Evan Sievwright in. We didn't perform well. That was a bummer, but there were some southern teams that, even with good runs, they wouldn't have been catchable."

In girls' snowboarding, junior Nicole Long had three top-15 runs to take 12th in the overall standings. Freshman Sydney Sarkauskus was 26th in a field of 40, with a best finish of 23rd in giant slalom.

"The girls had decent days," Olson said. "Sydney was super happy coming in as a freshman and Nicole had a decent slalom. She was out with COVID all of last week. I think the girls did pretty well."

Slinger's Olivia Strupp won the individual girls' competition and Slinger also claimed the team championship in girls' snowboarding.

The snowboarding competition kicked off the three-day WIARA state championship weekend. The skiing portion of the event took place Sunday and Monday, concluding after press time for today's edition. A follow-up story will be published in Friday's River News.
