Jim was born in Rhinelander on Jan. 7, 1936, to Bennie J. and Isabel M. (Rhode) Stefonek. He was raised in Rhinelander and was a 1955 graduate of Rhinelander High School. On Feb. 28, 1955, Jim was united in marriage in Iron Mountain, Mich. to Faythe Marie Mikkelson. They lived in Rhinelander until 1961 when the family moved to Sugar Camp. He was employed by Hill Oil Co., Rhinelander Paper Company, and Pitlik and Wick Construction Company.
Jim was a member of St. Kunegunda of Poland Catholic Church, a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Rhinelander and a past member of the Oneida County Civil Air Patrol.
He enjoyed camping, traveling to Florida, but most of all, Jim loved spending time with his family.
Survivors include his children, Sandy (Jim) Ovsak of Eagle River, Bill (Geri) Stefonik of Rhinelander, Carolyn (Robert) Briggs of Monico, Patty (Rod) Bessa of Pelican Lake, Bruce (Debbie) Stefonik of Monico, and Brian (Julie) Stefonik of Sugar Camp, 15 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Faythe Stefonik, on Aug. 20, 2022; two grandchildren, Don, and James Ovsak II, and by his sister, Janet M. (Jim) Piasecki.
The visitation for Jim will take place on Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, at St. Kunegunda of Poland Catholic Church, located at 6895 State Road 17, Sugar Camp, from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial. Fr. Rich Rhinehart and Dn. Al Goodrich will officiate.
Inurnment will take place at a later date at the Sugar Camp Cemetery.
Jim will be deeply missed by his family.
