RHS sports recap: Saturday, Feb. 18.
One of the three wrestlers Rhinelander sent to sectionals Saturday and Shawano advanced to the WIAA individual state tournament.
Senior Abby Swanson won the girls' 185-pound bracket, earning a pair of pins, as she punched her ticket to the Kohl Center in Madison.
Junior Owen Kurtz was close to joining her but, for the second year in a row, fell one match short. After reaching the finals at 285, Kurtz was pinned in succession by Ashwaubenond's Troy Bietzler and Bay Port's Vaughn Campbell to finish third in the class. Only the top two from each weight class advanced.
Freshman Mya Swanson lost her opening match in the girls' 132-pound bracket, eliminating her from state contention.
