The Hodag Nordic middle school teams took part in the WNSL state distance races in Cable this past Saturday and Sunday. The Hodag girls took eighth out of 12 complete teams while the Hodag boys were 10th in a 13-team field.
The Hodag girls were led by a trio of eighth-graders - Lucy Eddy, Mya Gillen and Kali Skubal - who finished 15th, 23rd and 44th out of 82 skiers who competed in both Saturday's freestyle race and Sunday's classic event.
Eddy was 26th following freestyle on Saturday, but made the podium on Sunday with the 10th-fastest classic time as she completed the two races in a combined time of 22 minutes, 7.9 seconds.
"This is no small accomplishment as no Rhinelander skier at any level or in any technique has stood on a state-level podium in at least 10 years, and probably many more than that," Hodag Nordic coach Dave Slette noted.
Gillen picked up seven places on Sunday after finishing 30th in the classic race. Kali Skubal bagel two spots after placing 46th on Saturday. Kelsie Skubal finished 54th overall, Noelle Mayo was 69th and Pearl Calhoun finished 72nd.
Jonathan Calhoun led the Hodag boys. He posted the 41st-fastest time both days and finished 38th overall (21:47.3). Aaron Calhoun was 47th, Austen Slette was 51st, Douglas Hartmann took 78th and Samuel Loomis was 82nd. Jonathan Calhoun was the lone eighth-grader in the group.
Middle school bowlers fall to Antigo
The Rhinelander/Elcho middle school bowling team dropped a rematch with Antigo No. 2, 7-2 Sunday at North Star Lanes in Antigo.
The Hodags trailed 4-2 after six games and then dropped Game 7 despite posting its second-highest score of the day in a 168-156 defeat to the Robins. Overall the Hodags averaged 124.8 pins per game and filled 44.4% of their frames.
"Many of the kids didn't adapt well to being in a different bowling center and couldn't figure out the lanes," coach Cory Dellenbach said. "It was frustrating for some of them."
Natalie Dellenbach and Aubree Doppke led the way for the team. Dellenbach filled 10 of her 14 frames on the way with three strikes. Doppke was 10 of 18 on the day with five strikes.
"Aubree and Natalie though came out and adapted well though. Aubree had probably the best match of her year," coach Dellenbach said.
Nate Lavender went 7 of 16 with a strike, Alyssa Habeck was 7 of 17 with two strikes, Eli Miller went 5 of 12 with two strikes and Aiden Johnson was 1 of 12.
The Hodags' top game was Game 4, when it beat Antigo 168-127.
Many of the middle school bowlers will compete in the WiHSBC D9 singles tournament in Plover this coming weekend. The next dual meet for the middle schoolers will be March 19 in Merrill.
