The 2023 Wisconsin Lakes and Rivers Convention is now open for registration. The annual event will be held April 19-21, 2023 at the Holiday Inn and Convention Center in Stevens Point. Early registration is open until March 1, 2023, and those registering before that date receive 20% off their registration cost.

Wednesday's offerings include several workshops as well as field trips in both the morning and afternoon. Morning workshops include titles such as; "Wisconsin's Public Trust Doctrine in the 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities," "Angler Education Instructor Certification," "Fisheries Management 101" and several others. The Wednesday morning field trips is a campus tour of the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point.

After lunch on Wednesday, participants can pre-register for a Wild Rose Fish Hatchery Tour or the Wisconsin Underground and Beer Tour at the Stevens Point Brewery. There are also numerous workshops that afternoon. Some of those titles include "Aquatic Macroinvertebrates," "Aquatic Plant Ecology and Identification," "Loon Ranger Training" and "Holistic Management of Fish and Aquatic Plants."

There is a networking session after the workshops on Wednesday as well. Attendees can visit with exhibitors and sponsors at that time. Starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 will be the Wisconsin Lakes Partnership Welcome Reception and Poster Presentations. This is an informal gathering of water lovers for both new attendees and those who have attended for years.

Thursday's concurrent sessions start at 8 a.m. Some concurrent sessions are available on the virtual platform EventMobi. Morning sessions look at dam safety, lake management, surface water grants, recreational impacts and information about communication for lake groups and other stakeholders. There are seven sessions running concurrently in four time slots on Thursday. Watershed project planning, design and construction, as well as the role of the regional planning commission, aquatic plant management, measuring trust in community science and a session regarding wild rice decline in the north are all session topics for Thursday.

There will also be a keynote speaker at lunch both Thursday and Friday. Thursday's speaker has yet to be announced. Friday's speaker will be Dr. John Francis, Planetwalker. His presentation will include how an oil spill in 1971 lead him to stop using motorized vehicles and how that turned into a vow of silence lasting 17 years.

Friday's concurrent sessions run in the same format at Thursday's offering. Starting at 8 a.m., attendees may chose from titles such as "Wetland Forest Trees of Wisconsin," "Fish and Zooplankton Community Responses to the Cessation of Long-Term Invasive Eurasian Milfoil Chemical Treatments" and "Developing Organizational Capacity for Lake Organizations."

Other presentations include looking further into recreational impact, shoreland zoning, avian insectivores and PFAS.

Friday afternoon includes trout fisheries management in Wisconsin, as well as a presentation about mosquito spraying and use of insecticides in yard. Cyanobacteria blooms, collaborations that work and chloride management are just some of the topics for Friday afternoon.
