Resident of mobile home damaged in Feb. 1 fire charged with unsafe burning
By River News Staff-
According to a criminal complaint filed Feb. 6, Ian P. Anderson told law enforcement he poured a few drops of a substance that included alcohol onto a board inside his residence and used a lighter to set the board on fire.
Anderson, 37, told authorities that he set the fire in an effort to drive away "voices" he had been hearing. He said the voices were coming from beneath his home and the nearby woods, according to the complaint.
The complaint also states that Anderson admitted to being a regular user of an illicit drug that is known to cause auditory hallucinations.
Firefighters from several local fire departments responded to the fire.
According to the Pine Lake Fire Department Facebook page, a call came it at approximately 8:19 a.m. Feb. 1 reporting a mobile home was on fire.
The Pelican Fire Department was dispatched as automatic aid along with the Oneida County sheriff's department, Medic 1 and Wisconsin Public Service. The Sugar Camp Fire Department was requested for mutual aid.
"While enroute to the call heavy smoke could be seen from Hwy. 17," according to the Pine Lake FD Facebook page. "MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) was requested to the box level for additional resources. Engine 2 arrived on scene to a mobile home with heavy fire showing. Firefighters initiated attack with a 2.5" ground monitor knocking the fire down before additional handlines were used to extinguish the fire. Water supply was set up on frontage road by Menards for refilling the tankers to shuttle water to the fire."
The Rhinelander, Newbold and Crescent fire department all responded under the box alarm. Firefighters were on scene for approximately 4 1/2 hours, according to the post.
Anderson made his initial appearance on the Class H felony Monday afternoon without counsel.
He is free on $1,000 cash bond posted over the weekend and is due back in court in March for an adjourned initial appearance.
The charge carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison.
