First graders from Crescent Elementary School recently enjoyed a winter field trip to the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom (CAVOC). In addition to snowshoeing and tubing, the students enjoyed a special visit from Mark Naniot from the Wild Instincts wildlife rehabilitation center who shared a lesson tied to the class's bird unit. To warm up after enjoying outdoor activities, they drank hot chocolate inside. CAVOC is named in honor of Ced Vig, who established it as one of the first school forests in the state. Vig, a former Rhinelander school superintendent, naturalist and writer, was known for his passion for both education and the outdoors.
