With only three gymnasts competing on Tuesday, the Rhinelander High School gymnastics team did not have enough depth to get past Lakeland, falling 100.3-59.05 in a Great Northern Conference Small Division dual in the Hodag Dome.

"The meet went well," Hodag coach Kristina Aschenbrenner noted. "Leta Cole and Wendy Fronk competed in all events, having solid performances. We had a new gymnast, Leighann Hopple, who competed for the first time in gymnastics, competing on vault and beam."

Fronk had the best performances of the evening for the team in two of the four events. The sophomore finished runner-up on both vault (7.65) and floor exercise (7.05), and took third in the individual all-around with a 24.6.

But the night mainly belonged to Cole, the Hodags' lone senior. The event was senior night, parents night and YMCA youth night all rolled into one. Cole led the Hodags on balance beam, taking fifth (5.5) and with a fourth-place finish on uneven bars (4.7) as she took fourth in the all-around (23.95).

Afterward, Aschenbrenner highlight's Cole's important role within the program.

"Leta Cole, our senior, has been a part of the team all four years. She is known for adding something different in her routines, whether it is a unique combination on bars, a creative mount on beam or ever changing floor choreography," she said. "She has great team spirit and motivates and helps all the other girls. She really stepped up this year for Rhinelander Gymnastics when the YMCA was struggling to find coaches. She took on a number of classes to train up our future gymnasts. Tonight was YMCA night and many of those little gymnasts were at the meet and you could hear them cheering on, 'Go Leta!'"

Hoople, a junior, took eighth on both vault and balance beam in her first competition.

Lakeland's Vicky Wiza won the all-around (26.6), one point ahead of teammate Brooke Crandall. The two spilt the event victories on Tuesday with Wiza taking the floor exercise and balance beam, and Crandall winning the vault and uneven bars.

According to Aschenbrenner, the Hodags have pulled out of Saturday's non-conference Marshfield Invite due to "some scheduling conflicts." The Hodags are scheduled travel to Mosinee this coming Tuesday for a GNC Small dual meet.

"We are excited to get back in the gym and work on incorporating those skills we have been working on," Aschenbrenner said. "If everyone stays healthy and the weather holds out, I am sure we will see some new skills at the next meet."
