Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 54, Ashland 32
The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team overcame some offensive struggles in the second half on Thursday night before eventually pulling away to a 54-32 win at Ashland.
The Hodags committed 17 second-half turnovers and made only one of their first 13 attempts from 3-point range in the second, but yet Rhinelander’s lead never dropped below 10 points. That was because the Hodags held the Oredockers to just over 33% shooting and forced 25 turnovers.
Will Gretzinger and Devon Feck each had 11 points to lead Rhinelander. The Hodags (6-3, 3-0 Great Northern) will travel to Marshfield Jan. 2.
Girls’ basketball: Rhinelander 75, Ashland 39
Freshman Aubryn Clark scored a career-high 41 points and Rhinelander pulled away to a 75-39 victory over Ashland on the road in girls’ basketball non-conference play Thursday night.
Clark set an program record for most 3s by a single player in a game, making nine in the contest. She also became only the third player in school history to record a 40-point game, finishing one point shy of Ava Lamers’ school-record 42 points set last November at Rice Lake.
The Hodags led wire-to-wire. Clark had 28 in the first half was the Hodags led 36-19 at the break. Lily Treder added 18 points for Rhinelander and Leah Jamison had nine.
Rhinelander (8-3, 4-0 Great Northern) travels to Wisconsin Rapids Jan. 2.
