RBA 7th graders take 7th at GNBL championship

The Rhinelander Basketball Association’s seventh-grade girls’ basketball team made it to the championship bracket and finished seventh in the 32-team Great Northwest Basketball League Championship Tournament held Dec. 16 and 17 in New Richmond. The Hodags wound up 5-2 in the tournament, with both losses coming by two points. Pictured, the team poses for a photograph following Sunday’s play. In the front row, from left to right, are Maddie Paulson, Jessa Achterberg, Anna Cure, Kenzie Paulson and Gemma Ring. In the back row are Kylie Treder, Corynn Waksmosnki, Kaydence Walters, Teagan Clark and coach Brian Paulson. The Hodags went undefeated in pool play on Saturday, defeating Cameron 33-25, Ellsworth 49-25 and Chippewa Falls Red 44-33. The Hodags then downed Sparta 35-24 Saturday night to advance to the round of 8. St. Croix Central White edged Rhinelander 29-27 in the quarterfinals, and Wisconsin Dells defeated the Hodags 44-42 in the consolation semifinals before the Hodags won the seventh-place game, 27-21 over Tomah.


Squirt A  tournament

The Rhinelander Ice Association hosted a Squirt A/B tournament Dec. 15-17 at the Rhinelander Ice Arena. The Hodags’ Squirt A team finished eighth in its bracket, dropping all three of its contests. Rhinelander lost 7-0 to Marinette-Menominee on Friday night, 7-1 to Sheboygan on Saturday and 5-0 to Washington County on Sunday.

JV Gymnastics

The Hodag gymnastic team fielded a handful of junior varsity entries during a GNC Small dual meet against Ashland Tuesday, Dec. 19. Pictured, Lena Timphus competes on the vault. Timphus had the top vault score for Rhinelander (7.1) while Arieanna Crossman and Emma Tagalos each scored 6.9s. Crossman also competed JV on the floor exercise, earning a 5.1.
