RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Dec. 21

Boys’ basketball: Merrill 72, Rhinelander 66

The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team fell on the road 72-66 at Merrill on Thursday night.

Will Gretzinger scored 23 to lead four Rhinelander players in double figures. Devon Feck had 12, Truman Lamers had 11 and Seth Nofftz had 10. EJ Weix paced Merrill with 36.

Rhinelander (5-3, 3-0 Great Northern) travels to Ashland Dec. 28.

Girls’ basketball: Rhinelander 73, Merrill 45

The RHS girls’ basketball team used a combination of hot shooting and strong defense to get back into the win column Thursday night with a 73-45 home victory over Merrill. 

The Hodags shot just under 55% from the field and made 14 3-pointers, while limiting the Bluejays to under 32% shooting. Aubryn Clark and Lily Treder were a combined 14 of 16 from the field as they scored 19 points each to lead Rhinelander. Leah Jamison chipped in 12.

Mia Ott paced Merrill with 15 points. 

Rhinelander (7-3, 4-0 Great Northern) travels to Ashland Dec. 28.

Boys’ hockey: Marshfield 4, Rhinelander 1

The Hodag boys’ hockey team fell at Marshfield 4-1 on Thursday. Further details were not immediately available.

Rhinelander (3-6-0, 0-3-0-0 Great Northern) is off until Jan. 4 when it travels to Medford.

Wrestling: RHS boys 15th/26, RHS girls 11th/15, Hodag Scramble

The Rhinelander wrestling team finished in the middle of the pack in the 28-team Hodag Scramble Thursday in the Hodag Dome. The Hodags took 15th in the boys division and 11th in the girls’ division.

Owen Kurtz was the runner-up at 215 pounds and led three Hodag boys who earned podium finishes. Logan Schwinger was fourth at 175 and Aiden Ostermann took sixth at 150.

Mya Swanson finished third for the Hodag girls’ in the 126-132 bracket. 

Rhinelander will be back in action Dec. 28 and 29 at the Northern Badger Invite in River Falls.
