RHS Sports recap: Friday, Dec. 15


Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 69, Tomahawk 26


The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team blitzed Tomahawk from the start Friday night and rolled to a 69-26 victory over the Hatchets in Tomahawk.


The Hodags opened the game on a 29-4 run and led 47-8 at halftime. Will Gretzinger scored 25 points to lead the Hodags, Truman Lamers added 14 points and Caden Sieker recorded a double-double, collecting 10 points and 10 rebounds. 


Tyler Sundquist led Tomahawk with 16 points. 


Rhinelander (5-1, 3-0 Great Northern) hosts Wausau West on Tuesday.


Girls’ basketball: Rhinelander 69, Tomahawk 22


The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team overcame a slow start and defeated Tomahawk 69-22 Friday night at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium. 


The Hodags’ lead over the last-place Hatchets was only 13-8 with 8:30 remaining in the first half, but Rhinelander closed on a 26-4 run to lead by 27 at half and continued to pull away in the second. 


Aubryn Clark scored a game-high 32 points for the Hodags while Lily Treder had 11 for Rhinelander. Freya Alberg and Lydia Zert each had seven for Tomahawk.


Rhinelander (6-2, 4-0 Great Northern) hosts Wisconsin Rapids Assumption on Monday.


Wrestling: Rhinelander 1-1, Amherst Triangular


The Rhinelander High School wrestling team split its matches on Friday at a triangular meet at Amherst. The Hodags defeated Amherst 36-30 and lost to Tomahawk. A score for the Tomahawk match had not been published online or received by the River News as of the time of this post. 


Anthony Boldt, Gage Anderson and Aiden Ostermann recorded pins for Rhinelander against Amherst. Shayden Hylleberg and Brock Sternitzky picked up forfeit wins in the heavy weights and Hoyt Dantoin’s forfeit win and 113 pounds clinched the dual for the Hodags. 


Gavin Liebherr, Logan Schwinger, Gavin Snider-Dotter, Owen Kurtz and Reid Schultz won matches against Tomahawk.


Rhinelander (1-3, 0-2 Great Northern) has Mya Swanson wrestling in the Shawano Girls’ Holiday Classic on Saturday. The full team will return to action Thursday when it hosts the Hodag Invite at the Hodag Dome.
