Girls’ hockey: Pines co-op edges Medford 3-1
Rhinelander freshman Reese Retallick scored the clinching goal late in the third period Tuesday night as the Northland Pines co-op defeated Medford 3-1 on the road.
Players that Pines inherited from the defunct Northern Edge (Rhinelander/Antigo/Lakeland) co-op accounted for all the goals on Tuesday. Lakeland’s Taylor Heleniak scored twice in the first period and assisted on Retallick’s goal with 1:54 remaining in regulation.
Pines outshot Medford 33-22 in the contest. Jenna Uhrine made 21 saves in the win, the first of the season for the Pines co-op.
The Eagles (1-5-0) host Black River Falls this afternoon in Eagle River.
RHS basketball teams to hold toy drives next week
The Rhinelander High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will hold their annual Kindness for Kids toy drive events in conjunction with non-conference contests next week at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
The Hodag boys will hold their drive Tuesday, Dec. 19 during their contest against Wausau West. The Hodag girls will hold their drive Thursday, Dec. 21 against Merrill.
Fans are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the games. Toys collected will be given a Kindness for Kids, a local organization that delivers gifts to less fortunate families in the area during the holidays.
Tip off for both varsity contests will be 7:15 p.m.
Hodag Hockey Alumni Game to return Dec. 30
The Hodag Blue Line Club presents the Hodag Hockey Alumni Game, which will take place at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30 at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
The event is open to graduated Rhinelander High School, Rhinelander/Northern Edge girls hockey players as well as former Rhinelander Ice Association skaters.
Registration is $20 per player. The Blue Line Club invites players and spectators to stick around for appetizers following the game.
