City Council president won’t run for re-election
By River News Staff
Rhinelander City Council president Eileen Daniel will not run for re-election in 2024.
According to City Clerk Austyn Zarda, Daniel has filed a declaration of non-candidacy for the spring election.
She was elected to represent District 7 in 2020, as part of a wave of fresh faces on the council.
In April 2022, she was nominated to serve as city council president and outpolled alderman David Holt 5-3 to win the position.
Later that year she entered state politics but failed to unseat Rep. Rob Swearingen (R-Rhinelander) in the state Assembly’s 34th district.
Daniel did not immediately respond to a request for comment on her decision to step down from the council.
Also facing election in 2024 are alderpersons Tom Barnett (District 1), Carrie Mikalauski (District 3) and Gerald Anderson (District 5).
Prospective candidates for city office could take out nomination papers starting on Dec. 1.
The deadline for incumbents not seeking re-election to file non-candidacy papers is Dec. 22. The deadline to return to completed nomination papers is Jan. 2, 2024.
The spring election will coincide with the state’s presidential preference primary on April 2, 2024.
