RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Dec. 5
Boys’ basketball: Wausau East 82, Rhinelander 63
The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team fell behind early and was not able to keep up with Wausau East’s high-flying offense in an 82-63 loss Tuesday night at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
The Lumberjacks, who came in averaging 89.8 points per game, hit seven 3-pointers in the first half and built a 48-26 lead. Rhinelander never drew any closer than 14 in the second.
Truman Lamers scored 25 for Rhinelander to lead all scorers while Will Gretzinger added 13. Jesse Nepgazek had 23 to lead four Lumberjacks in double figures.
Rhinelander (2-1, 1-0 Great Northern) hosts Northland Pines on Friday.
Boys’ hockey: Pacelli 7, Rhinelander 4
Pacelli scored four goals in a 2-minute, 53-second span midway through the third period Tuesday night to break a 3-all tie and went on to beat the RHS boys’ hockey team 7-3 in Stevens Point.
Despite outshooting the Cardinals 47-41 overall, and 24-9 in the final period, the short flurry was too much to overcome.
Pacelli led 3-1 after a period before Rhinelander rallied to tie it 3-3 after two. Joey Belanger scored twice and had a pair of assists for the Hodags. Gavin Denis and Timber Cronauer also scored. Tyler Kimmerling made 34 saves in defeat.
Rhinelander (2-3-0, 0-1-0-0 Great Northern) hosts Waupaca on Friday.
