Minocqua man from 2020 hit-and-run causing injury sentenced

A Vilas County court case which was opened against a Minocqua man following an alleged hit-and-run involving injury in March of 2020 closed last Wednesday, Nov. 22, after judge Daniel Overbey imposed a sentence on Ronald Schisel, 54.

In August, a two-day trial was set for Schisel, but during an Aug. 8 motion hearing, court records indicated the state and Schisel’s lawyer Dennis Melowski reached a “tentative resolution.”

According to the court record of the Nov. 22 sentencing hearing, Overbey ordered Schisel to serve 45 days in the county jail with Huber privileges for employment purposes only. He is to serve a 31-month revocation of license and have an ignition interlock device in his vehicle for 31 months too.

Additionally, court records show, Schisel’s fine and costs totaled $5,095 in the case, and an assessment is to be done for an alcohol abuse program and driver safety plan to be created for him as well.

On March 13, 2020, Schisel allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign and T-boned another vehicle in Arbor Vitae near State Highway 47 and South Farming Road. According to court documents, he fled the accident scene in a truck down a nearby snowmobile trail.

After he left the accident scene, responding law enforcement officers were made aware by a caller that Schisel returned to his place of work — Outback 51 on U.S. Highway 51. Apparently, court documents say, the caller was Schisel’s wife.

When confronted, law enforcement noted Schisel’s eyes appeared to be glassy and bloodshot, also emitting an odor of intoxicants. According to court documents, he was arrested after becoming confrontational with officers.

Court records show Schisel being charged with two felonies and three misdemeanors, with two of the Class H felonies and the Class U misdemeanor being dismissed and the misdemeanors classes A and U — resisting or obstructing an officer and a third operating while intoxicated — being guilty due to no contest pleas.
