RHS Sports recap: Saturday, Dec. 2


Boys’ swimming: Rhinelander 1st/5, Wisconsin Rapids Invite


The Rhinelander High School boys’ swim team won nine events and took first place Saturday in the Wisconsin Rapids Invite. 


Samson Shinners and Mathias Fugle were both four-event winners for the Hodags as Rhinelander swept the freestyle races. Shinners won the 200 and 500, Fugle took the 50 and 100 and both were on the team’s winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays. 


Brock Arrowood won the 100 butterfly and Shawn Denis took the 100 breaststroke for the Hodags, who also claimed the win in the 200 medley relay.


Rhinelander (2-0 Great Northern) returns to action this coming Saturday when it hosts the annual Hodag Relays.


Wrestling: RHS boys 10th/16, RHS girls 6th/15, John Roberts Scramble


The Hodag boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams opened their season on Saturday at the John Roberts Scramble in Antigo. The Hodag boys finished 10th out of 16 teams while the Hodag girls took sixth out of 15 teams.


With multiple entries allowed in each weight class, the Hodags went 1-2 in the heavyweight division on the boys’ side, with Owen Kurtz pinning teammate Reid Schultz for the championship. Kurtz finished the day 5-0 while Schultz was 4-1. Logan Schwinger was third for Rhinelander at 175 pounds and freshman Gavin Snider-Dotter was fifth at 215. 


Mya Swanson went a perfect 5-0 on the day with four pins to claim the girls’ 126-pound class.


The Hodags boys are back in action this coming Saturday in Crandon while the Hodag girls will next compete Dec. 16 at the Shawano Invite.
