RHS Sports Recap: Thursday, Aug. 31


Boys’ soccer: Rhinelander 2, Antigo 0


The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team struggled to finish scoring opportunities, but did so enough times to squeak out a 2-0 victory on the road Thursday afternoon at Antigo. 


Will Quinn and Will Gretzinger had a goal and an assist each — with Quinn scoring in the 16th minute and Gretzinger scoring in the 43rd. Rhinelander took 38 shots in the match, but only 15 finished on target.


Antigo meanwhile was held to six shots and Barak Rappley made two saves in his third shutout of the year for Rhinelander. 


The Hodags (3-1-0, 2-0-0-0 Great Northern) host Lakeland next Thursday.


Volleyball: Antigo 3, Rhinelander 0


The RHS volleyball team faded down the stretch in each set Thursday night as it was swept by Antigo in the GNC opener 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium. 


The Hodags were tied at 19 in the first set, up 16-15 in the second and tied 18-all in the third, but Antigo responded with four-plus point rallies each time. 


Kelsi Beran had five kills for Rhinelander while Lexi Robinson and Libbey Buchmann had four each. Lucy Lindner had 16 assists and five service aces, Emma Chimulera and Tori Stella each had four dig and Lily Treder had four blocks.


Rhinelander (7-4, 0-1 Great Northern) hosts Lakeland next Thursday.


Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 134, Ladysmith Co-op 36


The Hodag girls’ swim team had a big night in the pool, sweeping all 11 events and setting four pool records in a 134-36 victory at Ladysmith Thursday in the GNC opener. 


Abi Winnicki took down the pool record in the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.08) while Karis Francis broke a minute and a pool record in the 100 backstroke (59.37). The Hodags also set pool records in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays. 


Winnicki, Karis Francis and Celia Francis were all four-event winners. Winnicki added a win in the breaststroke individually, Karis Francis took the 50 freestyle and Celia Francis won both the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Lily Thorsen added a win in the 500 freestyle and June Chiamulera took the 100 freestyle. In all, eight different Hodags play a role in at least one win.


Rhinelander (1-0 Great Northern) travels to Medford next Thursday.


Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander 7, Phillips 0


The RHS girls’ tennis team swept Phillips 7-0 on the road in Great Northern Conference play on Thursday. 


It was not a slam dunk for the Hodags, which needed to rally to win a three-set match at No. 3 doubles but got a win from Willow VanDenHeuvel and Maya Patrick. Kayla Tessmann/Karmen Lopez and Evelyn Sawyer/Brooke Sisel took the top two doubles flights. 


Tori Riopel, Dawsyn Barkus, Shayla Coppenger and Sam Aschenbrenner swept singles play for Rhinelander. 


The Hodags (9-10, 2-0 Great Northern) will take part in a triangular Tuesday in Medford.
