RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Aug. 29
Boys’ soccer: Rhinelander 1, Medford 0
Will Gretzinger scored in the 70th minute as the Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team opened Great Northern Conference play with a 1-0 victory over Medford Tuesday night at Mike Webster Stadium.
Gretzinger got free after a Medford defender misplayed a ball sent up the middle by Neil Weigel and converted the breakaway chance for the game winner.
Barak Rappley made three saves in the match to earn the win. One of those came on an Adyn Gripentrog penalty kick chance in the 27th minute. Rhinelander outshot Medford 14-11 overall and had a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
Rhinelander (2-1-0, 1-0-0-0 Great Northern) travels to Antigo on Thursday.
Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander 5, Pacelli 2
The Rhinelander High School girls’ tennis team opened Great Northern Conference play with a 5-2 victory over Pacelli on Tuesday at the RHS tennis courts.
The Hodags swept doubles on the day and were victorious in a pair of three-set matches to secure the win. Shayla Coppenger outlasted Pacelli’s Morgan Matowitz, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles while the Hodags’ No. 1 doubles team of Kayla Tessmann and Karmen Lopez faded off Julie Milbauer and Annabelle Arnold 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Evelyn Sawyer and Brooke Sisel (No. 2 doubles) and Maya Patrick and Willow VanDenHeuvel (No. 3) scored straight set wins to round out a doubles sweep. Freshman Becca Brost picked up a straight-set win at No. 4 singles.
Rhinelander (8-10, 1-0 Great Northern) travels to Phillips on Thursday.
Cross country: RHS boys 2nd/9, girls 4th/8, Mosinee Invite
The Hodag cross country team again finished in the top half of the field on Tuesday, taking runner-up in the boys’ division and fourth in the girls’ division of the Mosinee Invite in Wausau.
Greyson Gremban paced the Hodag boys, taking fourth overall and covering the 5K course in 17 minutes, 37 seconds. Brody Kowieski (14th), Gavin Denis (15th), Avrom Barr (21st) and Jackson Weinzatl (22nd) rounded out the top five for Rhinelander.
Leah Jamison led the Hodag girls with a 16th-place finish (22:49). Kara Monk was 27th, Luna Grage finished 28th, Sophie Miljevich was 29th and Brynn Teter finished 32nd as the Hodags’ Nos. 2-8 runners were separated by only 52 seconds.
Rhinelander will return to action this coming Tuesday in the Marshfield Invite.
