RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Aug. 24


Boys’ soccer: Wausau East 2, Rhinelander 0


The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team could not overcome conceding a pair of first half goals as it fell 2-0 to Wausau East Thursday night at Mike Webster Stadium.


East’s George Vang scored on a breakaway chance in the 19th minute and Gio Gomez converted a penalty kick in the 29th. 


The Hodags held a narrow 20-17 edge in shots in the contest. Barak Rappley made six saves in defeat. 


Rhinelander (1-1-0, 0-0-0-0 Great Northern) hosts Medford in the conference opener Tuesday.


Cross country: RHS boys 3rd/12, girls 2nd/8, Hodag Invite


The Rhinelander High School cross country team showed well in its season opener Thursday, taking second in the girls’ division and third in the boys’ division of the Hodag Invite at RHS.


Leah Jamison led the Hodag girls’ taking seventh overall with a time of 23 minutes, 0.7 seconds over five kilometers. Freshman Kara Monk was 21st, followed by Sophie Miljevich in 23rd, Luna Grage in 27th and Brynn Teter in 28th.


Greyson Gremban was third overall in the boys race with a time of 18:03.5. Brody Kowieski took 23rd, Gavin Denis was 30th, Avrom Barr finished 31st and Jackson Weinzatl was 48th.


The Hodags will head to Nine Mile Forest in Wausau on Tuesday for the Mosinee Invite.
