A 44-year-old Minnesota woman has been charged with kidnapping her mother, an Oneida County resident, according to court records.
A single felony count of kidnapping/use deceit to induce was filed in Oneida County Circuit Tuesday, Aug. 22 along with an arrest warrant for Brooke A. Memene of Minneapolis.
Upon conviction, the charge carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.
According to the complaint, Memene is accused of unlawfully transporting her 65-year-old mother from a short-term rehab center in the Minocqua area to Minnesota.
The complaint states the Minocqua Police Department received a report during the early morning hours of Aug. 21 that the 65-year-old woman had been transported away from the rehab center where she was staying.
According to the complaint, the 65-year-old woman’s sister reported that her niece may have signed the woman out of the facility. The woman’s sister is her sole guardian and the daughter was not authorized to sign her mother out if other family members were not present, the complaint states. The complaint also references an open warrant for the daughter out of another jurisdiction.
The case was publicized in the Twin Cities and, according to published reports, the 65-year-old woman was located Tuesday morning and is safe.
The complaint does not indicate where the woman was located or the current location of Memene.
