Free YMCA memberships offered to sixth-grade students

The YMCA of the Northwoods is offering sixth-grade students in the Northwoods a free membership to the YMCA for the 2023-24 school year. Memberships can start as early as their first day of sixth grade and will end on August 31, 2024, according to a Y press release.

“The sixth grade initiative is a middle school engagement program that will support healthy choices and behaviors for young tweens at the beginning of their transition from childhood to adulthood,” the release states. “Youth entering sixth grade can sign up for this membership at the YMCA of the Northwoods as registration is now open. Youth should bring a guardian and proof of grade (either a school ID, class schedule, or fifth grade report card) to the Welcome Center of the YMCA of the Northwoods at 2003 E. Winnebago Street to sign up. This membership will include time for open swimming, open gym time, a youth wellness certification, member rates on programs and activities, free teen nights on most Fridays as well as access to a dedicated teen space in the building: The Generation Center. The YMCA of the Northwoods is the first Y in the state of Wisconsin to offer this type of membership opportunity. The goal of the initiative is to nurture the potential of every child and teen in our community through the key dimensions of well-being: achievement, relationships and belonging.”
