RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Aug. 22


Boys’ soccer: Rhinelander 4, New London 0


Will Quinn scored three times as the Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team rolled in its season opener, picking up a 4-0 non-conference victory Tuesday at New London. 


Will Gretzinger scored the opening goal of the Hodags in the fourth minute. Quinn added two more before the 20-minute mark and tacked on one more in the second half. 


The Hodags outshot the Bulldogs 16-3 in the match. Junior Barak Rappley, making his first varsity start in goal, did not face a shot on net as he recorded the shutout. 


Rhinelander (1-0-0, 0-0-0-0 Great Northern) hosts Wausau East on Thursday.


Volleyball: Rhinelander 2-1, Hodag Quad


The Rhinelander High School volleyball team won its final two matches on Tuesday and finished with a 2-1 mark in its home quadrangular meet in the Hodag Dome. 


After falling in straight sets to Spencer to start the day, the Hodags rallied for a three-set win over Hurley before sweeping Chetek-Weyerhauser in two sets. 


Callie Hoerchler led a balanced attack with 13 kills on the day for Rhinelander. Libbey Buchmann had 12 kills while Macey Schmoeger and Kelsi Beran chipped in nine each. Lucy Lindner had 35 assists, Emma Chiamulera had 22 digs and Lily Treder had six blocks. 


Rhinelander (2-1, 0-0 Great Northern) travels to Wisconsin Dells for a two-day invite beginning Friday. 


Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander 2-4, Wausau West Invite


The Hodag girls’ tennis team wrapped up a two-day invite in Wausau Tuesday with a 2-4 record. 


Rhinelander dropped all three of its matches Monday, falling to Pulaski, Wausau West and Hudson by matching 6-1 scores. The Hodags fell to Bay Port 5-2 on Tuesday, but picked up a 6-1 win over Green Bay Preble and a 5-2 win over Pulaski. 


Rhinelander’s top two singles players, Tori Riopel and Dawsyn Barkus complied 4-2 records in the tournament for the Hodags. Shayla Coppenger (No. 3 singles) and Kayla Tessmann/Karmen Lopez (No. 1 doubles) each went 2-4 in the tournament. Maya Patrick and Evelyn Sawyer went 2-1 together as a tandem Tuesday at No. 2 doubles. 


Rhinelander (5-7, 0-0 Great Northern) returns to Wausau for another two-day invite beginning Friday.
