RHS sports recap: Friday, April 28


Baseball: Rhinelander 4, Ashland 1

Dylan Vanderbunt scattered three hits over seven innings and the RHS baseball team used a four-run third inning to get past Ashland 4-1 Friday in the home opener at Stafford Field.

Ashland got its lone run in the top of the third as Jacob Neff was hit by a pitch and scored on a two-out single by Marcus Kruzan. The Hodags answered in the bottom of the inning with five hits off Ashland's Xander Parduhn. Adrian Partone doubled and scored on a Max Ratty sacrifice fly. AJ Turek had a bunt single. He and Sam Schneider scored as Owen Kurtz reached single and error. Seth Nofftz added an RBI single.

Vanderbunt did not walk a batter and struck out five as he needed only 75 pitches to finish the game.

Rhinelander (3-7, 2-4 Great Northern) is scheduled to play at Lakeland on Monday.

Softball: Rhinelander 9, Crandon 6

The RHS softball team christened Musson Field at the Haug Family Softball Complex with a 9-6 win over Crandon on Friday.

The Hodags scored all their runs in the first two innings and held on after Crandon rallied to make it 9-6 in the fourth. Addi DeMeyer finished a home run short of the cycle and drove in two. She also struck out five batters over the final three innings to earn the save.

Maddi Roeser went 2 for 4, Libbey Buchmann was 2 for 2 with two RBIs. Laney Haenel drove in the pair and earned the win, allowing six runs on six hits with four strikeouts in four innings of work.

Rhinelander (6-10, 2-4 Great Northern) hosts Antigo on Monday.

Boys' tennis: Rhinelander 2-1 Wausau West Invite

The Hodag boys' tennis team won two of its three matches in Wausau on Friday. Rhinelander defeated Marshfield 5-2 and Menomonie 4-3 before losing 6-1 to Oshkosh West.

The Hodags went 2-1 at all three doubles flights with Joey Belanger/Layne Roeser, Leo Losch/Charlie Heck and Eli Lundt/Dawson Pontell. John Currie and Nick Lesch also went 2-1 at the Nos. 2 and 4 singles flights.

Rhinelander (10-5, 3-0 Great Northern) travels to Stevens Point on Tuesday.

Golf: Rhinelander 3rd/7, GNC Meet No. 2

The RHS golf team posted a season-best run of 335 to finish third Friday in the second leg of the GNC tournament at Black River Golf Course in Medford. The Hodags finished only 13 strokes behind first-place Lakeland and seven back of host Medford.

Andrew Henrichs shot a career-best 5-over round of 77 to finish with on the day. Sam Schoppe was ninth with a round of 80. Brody Kowieski was even par through nine holes but faded to an 83 and finished 10th. Blake Petroff shot 95 and Braden Mork shot 99.

Rhinelander is scheduled to play at Marathon on Monday.
