RHS sports recap: Thursday, April 27


Girls' soccer: Lakeland 1, Rhinelander 0

Taylor Heleniak scored on a breakaway in the 32nd minute, which proved to be the lone goal as Lakeland defeated Rhinelander 1-0 in a battle for first place in the GNC girls' soccer standings Thursday night in Minocqua.

Lakeland controlled possession much of the night and outshot the Hodags 27-13. The Hodags manage only five shots on goal and Lakeland snuffed out Rhinelander's best chance as Ava Evenhouse stopped Morgan Van Zile's redirection of a cross by Sophie Miljevich in the 68th minute.

Mya Krouze made nine saves in the loss for Rhinelander.

The Hodags (5-3-0, 3-1-0 Great Northern) travel to Mosinee on Tuesday.

Softball: Antigo 4, Rhinelander 3

Laura Burkhart scored on a passed ball with two out in the bottom of the seventh, which was the difference as Antigo edged Rhinelander 4-3 in a GNC softball contest Thursday night in Antigo.

Rhinelander took a 2-0 lead in the first on a Lily Treder two-run single, which held until the fifth when Molly Nuefeld hit a three-run double to right. Rhinelander tied it in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Kadyn Taylor.

Antigo outhit Rhinelander 10-6 in the game. Addi DeMeyer took the loss, allowing four runs over 6 2/3 innings with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Rhinelander (5-10, 2-5 Great Northenr) takes on Crandon Friday afternoon.

Golf: Rhinelander 3rd/9, Medford Invite

Rhinelander shot 353 on Thursday and took third out of nine teams in the Medford Invite at Black River Golf Course.

Sophomore Sam Schoppe had three birdies on his round and shot a 7-over 79 to finish fourth overall on the day for Rhinelander. Brody Kowieski finished eighth with an 81. Andrew Henrichs shot 90, Blake Petroff carded a 103 and Braden Mork shot 108.

Rhinelander is back in Medford Friday for the second leg of the GNC tournament.

Boys' tennis: Rhinelander at Antigo, ppd.

Rhinelander's boys' tennis meet at Antigo on Thursday was postponed due to persistent light rain. A makeup date was not immediately announced.

Rhinelander (8-4, 3-0 Great Northern) is in Wausau Friday for an invite.
