RHS sports recap: Tuesday, April 25


Girls' soccer: Rhinelander 4, Northland Pines 0

Ava Lamers scored three times Tuesday night as the RHS girls' soccer team extended its winning streak to five games with a 4-0 victory over Northland Pines at Mike Webster Stadium.

Lamers converted a penalty kick in the third minute and also scored twice in the second half of the match. Sophie Miljevich tallied the other goal for the Hodags, who outshot the Eagles 23-4. Mya Krouze recorded two saves as the Hodags posted their fourth straight shutout.

Rhinelander (5-2-0, 3-0-0 Great Northern) travels to Lakeland Thursday night.

Softball: Rhinelander 7, Tomahawk 1

The RHS softball team snapped a six-game losing skid on Tuesday.

Addi DeMeyer recorded nine strikeouts and scattered four hits, and the Hodags used two big innings to get past Tomahawk 7-1 in the Hodag Dome.

Rhinelander scored four times in the second inning and tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth. Abigale Johnson, Maddi Roeser and Laney Haenel all collected two hits and two RBIs in the contest.

Rhinelander (5-9, 2-4 Great Northern) travels to Antigo on Thursday.

Baseball: Medford 10-10, Rhinelander 6-0

The RHS baseball team was swept by Medford in a Great Northern Conference doubleheader 10-6 and 10-0 on the road Tuesday.

The Hodags spotted Medford six early runs, including five in the second inning of Game 1, and could never dig out of the hole. The Hodags got within 7-4 after a three-run sixth, but Medford answered with three in the bottom of the inning before the Hodags put up two in the seventh.

Cody Everson collected three hits and two RBIs for Rhinelander in Game 1. James Heck took the loss, allowing six runs, but only one earned on eight hits over four innings.

Medford's Logan Baumgartner tossed a two-hit shutout in Game 2 and the Raiders scored five times each in the second and the sixth to end the game early. Singles by Max Ratty and Owen Kurtz broke up Baumgartner's no-hit bid in the sixth. Ratty took the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Rhinelander (2-7, 2-4 Great Northern) is scheduled to host Ashland at home on Friday.

Boys' tennis: Rhinelander 5, Lakeland 2

The Hodag boys' tennis team picked up another Great Northern Conference win on Tuesday, defeating Lakeland 5-2 on the road in Minocqua.

The Hodags dominated doubles as the teams of Joey Belanger/Layne Roeser (No. 1), Leo Losch/Charlie Heck (No. 2) and Eli Lundt/Dawson Pontell (No. 3) dropped a total of two games between them in straight-set wins. John Currie and Gavin Denis added wins at Nos. 2 and 4 singles, respectively.

Rhinelander (8-4, 3-0 Great Northern) travels to Antigo on Thursday.

Golf: Rhinelander 5th/7, GNC Meet No. 1

The RHS golf team shot 377 and took fifth place on Tuesday in the first leg of the Great Northern Conference golf tournament at Indianhead Golf Course in Mosinee.

Sophomore Sam Schoppe carded a 14-over round of 86 in his conference debut to finish in a five-way tie for sixth-place, scoring three conference points. Andrew Henrichs shot 95, Blake Petroff and Brody Kowieski each shot 68 and Braden Mork carded a 115.

The Hodags are back in action Thursday at the Medford Invite.

Track: RHS boys 6th/9, girls 6th/9, Medford Invite

The Rhinelander track team took sixth in both the boys' and girls' divisions of the Medford Invite Tuesday in Medford. The Hodags did not win any events on the night.

Truman Lamers scored runner-up finishes for the Hodag boys in both the high jump and triple jump while Greyson Gremban finished second in the 3,200-meter run. Conner Jensen was third in the discus throw and Rhinelander took third with its 4x400 relay of Daniel Gillingham, Ben Olson, Kaleb Winter and Jackson Fuss.

On the girls' side, freshman Aila Bergman was the runner-up in the triple jump and part of a second-place finish in the 4x400 with Reese Gehrig, Gussie Gruett and Luna Grage. Callie Hoerchler was third in the high jump and third in the 4x100 with Emma Deede, Gerhig and Lexi Bishop.

The Hodags were slated to take part in the Eagle Relays on Thursday, but that event has been canceled due to track conditions. Rhinelander is seeking to find a different meet to take its place.
