Northwoods Food Insecurity Conference speakers announced
"We are excited to bring you five unique perspectives related to the challenge of food insecurity here in the Northwoods," Feed Our Rural Kids (FORK) president Perry Pokrandt explained in a press release. "This is a first of a kind opportunity in our area, and we look forward to the opportunity to further shape the dialogue around food insecurity in our area."
"The conference is May 4, in our Nicolet Theater at Nicolet College in Rhinelander," explained Nicolet College president Kate Ferrel. "The conference doors open to the public for registration at 8:30 a.m. with muffins and coffee available; presentations will run from 9 to 11 a.m."
The keynote speaker will be Feeding America president and CEO Patti Habeck who will break down the specific challenges around food insecurity faced by rural communities. She will be joined by Mick Fiocchi, president of the National Alliance on Mental Illness Northwoods (NAMI), who will talk about the impact of childhood food insecurity on our children's mental health. Steve Budnik, Northern IM Consortium manager, will help attendees better understand the federal government's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), while Courtney Smith, assistant executive director of the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry, will speak on local food distribution challenges and the challenge area pantries face in bringing help to families. Finally, Ali Pichowski, success coach at Nicolet College, will discuss childhood food insecurity's impact on individual success.
"We hope this conference will help to raise the food insecurity IQ of our Northwoods communities," concluded Pokrandt. "We welcome all who are interested in the challenges faced by food insecure families."
The Northwoods Food Insecurity Conference is a collaboration between FORK and the Vilas and Oneida County departments of social services.
