RHS sports recap: Friday, April 21
Marathon scored four times in the fifth inning to break a 2-all tie and defeated the RHS baseball team 6-2 in a non-conference matchup on the road Friday.
The Hodags jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to an RBI single by James Heck and a run scored by Owen Kurtz when Cody Everson reached on a two-out error in the first. Marathon tied it in the third inning and took the lead in the fifth thanks to a bases loaded hit-by-pitch followed by an RBI walk, a fielder's choice for a run and a double steal of second and home.
Kurtz collected three hits on the day while Heck was 2-for-4 with an RBI. The Hodags outhit Marathon 8-4 but left runners in scoring position in five innings. Kaden Vanney took the loss in relief, giving up four runs, but only one earned, over 2 1/3 innings.
Rhinelander (2-5, 2-2 Great Northern) travels to Medford for a doubleheader on Tuesday.
Boys' tennis: Rhinelander 1-2, De Pere Invite
The RHS boys' tennis team won one of its first three matches Friday at the De Pere Invite. The Hodags scored a 6-1 win over West De Pere, but lost 5-2 to De Pere and 4-3 to Kimberly.
The Hodags were swept in singles in both losses. Joey Belanger and Layne Roeser (No. 1 doubles) and Eli Lundt/Dawson Pontell (No. 3 doubles) were both 3-0 on the day, while Charlie Heck and Loe Losch went 2-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Rhinelander (5-3, 2-0 Great Northern) is scheduled to play three more matches in De Pere Saturday.
