Oneida planning and zoning suggests checking your septic system and cover
Each year, approximately 50 children drown or die from open or unprotected septic tanks and many others are seriously injured, county officials said in a press release. A recent incident in the Eau Claire area where a child fell into a septic tank and survived due to efficient emergency response is a reminder especially this spring to check your septic tank cover.
Due to environmental conditions such as heavy snow load this winter, heavy rains that we receive each year, the age of a septic tank, whether water and/or snow accumulates on top of the septic tank, some septic tank covers, especially older steel septic tank covers, weaken over time and can fail.
Check your septic tank cover to make sure it is locked or secured to prevent access. A septic tank that has a concrete cover is required to be locked to prevent access, especially by children. A septic tank with a plastic cover is required to have all the screws installed. Ensure the plastic lid where the screws are installed are not cracked or damaged. Otherwise, the screws will not secure the lid.
If you are unsure whether your septic tank is in good condition, or whether it needs to be replaced, or modified in order to make it safe, contact a local plumber or septic system installation company to visit your property and inspect the system.
