RHS sports recap: Tuesday, April 18
The Rhinelander High School baseball team picked up its first wins of the season on Tuesday, sweeping a doubleheader from Northland Pines 4-2 and 9-2 in Wisconsin Rapids.
Owen Kurtz drove in three runs in Game 1, including a two-run double in the fifth that gave the Hodags a 4-0 lead. The Eagled scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth, the only blemish against ace Max Ratty, who struck out 13 batters in a complete game win.
After the Eagles scored the opening run of Game 2, the Hodags jumped on Pines for two runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the second to take the lead for good. AJ Turek and Seth Nofftz both had two hits in the game while Ratty and Sam Schneider each drove in two runs. James Heck allowed two runs on six hits with five strikeouts over four innings to earn the win. Dylan Vanderbunt worked around three hits in three innings of scoreless relief to get the save.
Rhinelander (2-4, 2-2 Great Northern) has picked up a non-conference game Friday at Marathon.
Girls' soccer: Rhinelander 11, Antigo 0
The RHS girls' soccer team scored early and often Tuesday in an 11-0 rout of Antigo in the Hodag Dome.
Ava Lamers had four goals and three assists in the game while Sophie Miljevich and Leah Weigel each scored twice. Morgan Van Zile, Leah Jamison and Nevaeh Rappley also scored as Rhinelander led 8-0 at half and tacked on three more goals before ending the game at the 60-minute mark via the eight-goal rule.
Rhinelander totaled 42 shots in the game, 22 of which were on goal. Mya Krouze started and played 51 minutes in the shutout before giving way to Emalee Detienne for the final nine minutes of the match. Neither Hodag goalkeeper faced a shot on goal.
Rhinelander (3-2-0, 2-0-0-0 Great Northern) has picked up a non-conference game Thursday at home against Merrill.
Softball: Lakeland 6, Rhinelander 2
A big fifth inning proved to be the difference as Lakeland got past Rhinelander 6-2 in GNC softball play Tuesday in the Hodag Dome.
The T-Birds scored all of their runs in that frame, collecting four of the seven hits the had in the contest off Hodag ace Addi DeMeyer.
Lakeland hurler Saylor Timmerman recorded 19 strikeouts in the game, including five in the first, but some erraticness and dropped third strikes allowed two Hodags to reach base and score in that inning.
DeMeyer struck out 11 and walked nine in the loss for Rhinelander. Maddi Roeser, Nora Rutkowski and Laney Haenel had Rhinelander's hits off of Timmerman.
Rhinelander (4-8, 1-3 Great Northern) is scheduled to travel to Medford on Thursday.
