RHS sports recap: Thursday, April 13


Baseball: Antigo 12-12, Rhinelander 2-8

The RHS baseball team was swept in a doubleheader on Thursday, falling 12-2 in game 1 and 12-8 in game 2 of a GNC twin bill against Antigo in Wisconsin Rapids.

The Hodags led 1-0 after the first inning of Game 1, but Antigo tied it in the second, and then added four runs in the third, four in the fifth and three in the sixth. Rhinelander collected five hits in Game 1. Sam Schneider and Cody Everson both collected RBI singles. Max Ratty took the loss, allowing eight runs on six hits with four walks and a strikeout over four-plus innings.

The Hodags were two outs away from being no-hit in Game 2, trailing 11-0 in the fifth, but AJ Turek broke up the no-hit bid, Ratty followed with an RBI double to break up the shutout and Owen Kurtz drew a bases loaded walk to keep the game alive. From there, the Hodags scored four in the sixth and two more in the seventh to make the game somewhat interesting. Ratty had a pair of hits in Game 2. He, Schneider, Kurtz and James Heck drove in two runs each. Heck took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits over 2 2/3 innings.

Rhinelander (0-4, 0-2 Great Northern) will face Northland Pines in a doubleheader in Wisconsin Rapids this coming Tuesday.

Girls' soccer: Rhinelander 6, Medford 0

The RHS girls' soccer team struck quickly on Thursday, defeating Medford 6-0 in the GNC opener at Mike Webster Stadium. Ava Lamers and Sophie Miljevich each scored twice as the Hodags scored all six of their goals in the first 24 minutes. Leah Weigel also scored and the Hodags benefitted from an own goal.

The Hodags outshot Medford 40-4 in the contest. Mya Krouze recorded three saves in her first shutout of the season.

Rhinelander (2-2-0, 1-0-0 Great Northern) travels to Antigo on Tuesday.

Softball: Mosinee 18, Rhinelander 5

The RHS softball could not hold on following an early big inning, losing at Mosinee 18-5 on Thursday.

The Hodags scored all five of their runs in the second inning, taking a 5-3 lead, but Mosinee got a run back in the bottom of the inning, took the lead with a four-run third and then scored 10 in the fourth to ice it.

Maddi Roeser went 2-for-3 on the day and Lily Treder added an RBI double as the Hodags collected five hits. Addi DeMeyer went 3 1/3 innings, allowing 13 runs on seven hits with seven walks and five strikeouts.

Rhinelander (4-7, 1-2 Great Northern) faces Lakeland on Tuesday.

Boys' tennis: Rhinelander 7, Pacelli 0

The Hodag boys' tennis team rolled to its second GNC sweep of the season, beating Pacelli 7-0 Thursday in Stevens Point.

Rhinelander rolled in doubles as the teams of Layne Roeser/Joey Belanger, Leo Losch/Charlie Heck and Gavin Denis/Eli Lundt all won without dropping a game. Dalton Fritz was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles, John Currie won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, Dawson Pontell won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 and Nick Lesch won unopposed at No. 4.

Rhinelander (2-0, 2-0 Great Northern) travels to Wausau for an invite on Friday. The event has been moved up a day due to forecasted heavy rain and thunderstorms Saturday.

Track & Field: RHS boys 3rd/4, girls 2nd/3, Waunakee Invite

The RHS track team had a strong showing in the jumps Thursday as it finished second in the girls' division and third in the boys' division of the Waunakee quad.

Sophomore Truman Lamers took both the high jump (5 feet, 8 inches) and the triple jump (39-4) while Shane Petrick won the long jump (18-5). Zach German was third in the long jump and Kaleb Winter took third in the triple.

On the girls' side, Callie Hoerchler won the long jump (14-2 1/2) and was third in the high jump. Aila Bergman was the runner up in the triple jump and the 200-meter dash.

Rhinelander took second in both the boys' and girls' 4x400-meter relay with the teams of Sam Zwaard, Ben Olson, Winter and Germain; and Violet Biolo, Reese Gehrig, Bergman and Millie Gruett. Greyson Gremban added runner-up finishes for the Hodag boys' in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

The Hodags are back in action on Tuesday at the Lakeland Invite.

Golf: Rhinelander 2nd/3, GNC Spring Open, Day 1

The RHS golf team sat second after day one of a Great Northern Conference triangular at Trappers Turn in Wisconsin Dells on Thursday.

The Hodags shot 350 in the opening round, trailing Lakeland by 25 strokes and four strokes ahead of Mosinee.

Sophomore Brody Kowieski was fifth overall after Day 1, shooting an 8-over round of 80 that included a 1-under 35 on the back nine. Sam Schoppe was sixth in his varsity debut, shooting 83 and Andrew Henrichs was eighth, shooting a 90. Blake Petroff (97) and Braden Mork (101) rounded out Rhinelander's top five.

The meet concludes today.
