Local officers to be honored for teamwork in rescuing victims of 2022 fire
During Monday evening's meeting of the Rhinelander Common Council, Rhinelander Police Chief Lloyd Gauthier announced that Rhinelander police officers Nathaniel Anttila and Ryan Larsen, and three sheriff's deputies, have been selected by the Wisconsin Professional Police Association's awards committee to receive the 2023 Team Award.
"This award is presented for actions on April 24, 2022, when you and fellow officers evacuated 13 individuals as well as several pets from a burning apartment building," a letter from WPPA announcing the honor states. "The Team Award is presented in recognition of efforts made in the best interests of police service."
"As the chief, I am extremely proud of the effort displayed by Officer Anttila and Officer Larsen on the evening of April 24, 2022," Gauthier added in a personal statement. "Their efforts that evening clearly display their commitment to our mission and core values and to the citizens of Rhinelander."
The council and audience responded to Gauthier's announcement by offering a round of applause.
Oneida County sheriff's deputies Luke Linsmeyer, Gary Loduha and John Bertholomey are the county officers who will receive the award. According to the WPPA letter, the officers will receive their award during the WPPA's annual convention in the Wisconsin Dells April 29.
