GNC reverses course, back to 12-game schedule for baseball
The conference athletic directors met April 5 and, at that point, decided to reduce the season to a six-game, single-round robin on the heels of a massive snowstorm that dumped more than a foot of snow on the northern half of the conference.
That decision was met resistance from the conference's baseball coaches.
"Following some more discussion, the Great Northern Conference has decided to delay any decision to shorten the conference baseball season," conference commissioner Scott Winch wrote in an emailed statement on Monday. "As of right now, the season will be a double-round robin schedule to determine the conference championship as originally scheduled."
Winch added the hope is for the GNC to get in the 12-game schedule as planned. However, should the situation warrant, the ADs could adjust the schedule again at their May 2 meeting.
Fields in the northern half of the conference are still not ready for play, but teams are finding alternatives to get games in. Rhinelander and Antigo played twice in Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday while Northland Pines and Tomahawk played a doubleheader in Mosinee. Rhinelander and Northland Pines have nixed their home-and-home series scheduled for next week and will instead play a doubleheader in Wisconsin Rapids this coming Tuesday.
