OCHD receives vaccination grant for older adults
The program is supported with funding from the Administration for Community Living, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The health department stated the grant will support its work in making it as easy as possible for older adults and people with disabilities to get updated vaccinations and protect their health. OCHD will use the funds to reach Oneida County with trusted information and support getting to vaccine appointments. OCHD will also host vaccine clinics, beginning September 2023.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly nine out of 10 deaths from COVID-19 are among people 65 and over, and 70-85% of seasonal flu-related deaths occur in older adults.
While lifesaving vaccines are available, research shows COVID-19 vaccine uptake has slowed among older adults. Thanks to this grant, OCHS will organize a robust vaccination program to address this challenge in Oneida County.
"We (OCHD) are very happy to be partnering with NCOA to enhance our vaccination efforts. We recognize how severe illnesses like influenza and COVID can be for our aging population and those with disabilities. Vaccinations against these viruses are one of the best ways to protect the health of our community from poor outcomes. " said Robbie Deede, Preparedness Coordinator/Public Health Nurse, Oneida County Health Department.
