RHS sports recap: Thursday, April 6
Addi DeMeyer collected two hits at the plate and struck out 17 batters as the Rhinelander High School softball team got by Northland Pines 9-4 Thursday night in the Hodag Dome.
The Hodags led 8-0 through three innings before a couple of Northland Pines home runs closed the margin. Rhinelander pounded out 14 hits on the night. Lily Treder went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Maddi Roeser was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while Abigale Johnson and Laney Haenel added two hits each.
DeMeyer picked up the win. She scatted three hits and walked seven batters over seven innings.
Rhinelander (3-3, 1-0 Great Northern) hosts an eight-team invite in the Hodag Dome Friday and Saturday.
Girls' soccer: Wisconsin Rapids 4, Rhinelander 0
The RHS girls' soccer team was shutout on the road 4-0 by Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday night.
The Raiders scored three times in the first half and got a hat trick from senior Kate Schaeffer on the night.
Both teams totaled 10 shots in the match. Mya Krouze made four saves in the loss for Rhinelander.
The Hdoags (0-2-0, 0-0-0 Great Northern) are working to pick up a non-conference game on Tuesday against a yet to-be-determined opponent and will host Medford to open GNC play on Thursday.
Boys' tennis: Rhinelander 7, Lakeland 0
The Rhinelander High School boys' tennis team began yet another Great Northern Conference title defense with a 7-0 sweep over Lakeland Thursday night in the Hodag Dome.
Rhinelander won most of the matches in short order. The one exception was No. 1 singles where junior Dalton Fritz needed a third-set tiebreaker to get past Dominic Gironella 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (5) in a match that took more than 2 hours, 45 minutes to complete.
John Currie, Dawson Pontell and Nick Lesch rounded out a singles sweep for Rhinelander. Joey Belanger and Layne Roeser did not concede a single point in the first set as they rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Charlie Heck/Leo Losch and Eli Lundt/Gavin Denis completed the doubles sweep for Rhinelander.
The Hodags (1-0, 1-0 Great Northern) will scrimmage at Wausau West on Tuesday and will hop back into GNC play next Thursday at Stevens Point Pacelli.
Track & field: RHS boys 3rd/7, girls 2nd/8, GNC Indoor
The Hodags track team had a strong showing at the GNC-plus Indoor Meet on Thursday in Eagle River, taking second in the girls' division and third on the boys' side.
Senior Gussie Gruett won the 400 meters for Rhinelander while freshman Aila Bergman took the triple jump, finished second in the 200-meter hurdles and was fourth in the 55-meter hurdles. Sophomore Callie Hoerchler added runner-up finishes in the high jump and the long jump.
Sophomore Truman Lamers took both the high jump and the triple jump for the Hodag boys. Greyson Gremban won the 3,200 meters and was third in the 1,600. Kaleb Winter was the runner up in the pole vault, Conner Jensen took second in the shot put and the Hodags claimed second in the 4x800 and 4x400 relays.
Rhinelander has canceled a hybrid meet at the Hodag Dome scheduled for Tuesday and instead will travel to Waunakee for a quadrangular meet this coming Thursday.
