Ray graduated from Rhinelander High School with the Class of 1967, playing high school baseball, basketball and football where he was an offensive and defensive tackle for the Hodag football team. Ray was a stand-out on the gridiron being named to the Wisconsin Valley All-Conference team, the Channel 7 all-star team and the all-state team.
In 2004 Ray was inducted into the Hodag Sports Hall of Fame
Following graduation he attended Coffeyville Jr. College on a scholarship to play football for the Red Ravens where he played for two seasons and was voted most valuable lineman and named All-American after making the Jayhawk JUCO Conference all-star team, taking honors both offensively and defensively.
He then earned a scholarship to the University of Miami. He played his remaining two seasons at defensive tackle for the Miami Hurricanes, graduating from Miami in 1972.
He is survived by his wife Michelle of 48 years, son Brett (Dawn) and grandson Braden. He is further survived by his sisters, Carol Kelly and Sylvia (Bob) Huebner, brother-in-law Jeff Nichols, nephew Matt (Kathy) Huebner, niece Hayley (Jordan) Huebner, nephew Ryan Kelly, great-nephew Avery and great-niece Madelyn. He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law Billie Nichols and his brother-in-law Kevin Kelly.
Ray loved the great outdoors, hunting and fishing the fresh waters of Wisconsin and the salt waters of Florida.
