Kathy was born Feb. 7, 1945, in Ashland, and was the eldest of three children.
She met and married the love of her life, Erik Larsen, at Northland College in Ashland where she graduated with her bachelor's degree in education. She began her teaching career in Pontiac, Mich. and also taught in Three Lakes. She and Erik moved to Rhinelander in the early 1970s and quickly made it their home. Kathy dedicated much of her time giving back and volunteering in the community including the Children's Arts Program, Ruby's Pantry, School District of Rhinelander, Rhinelander Area Food Pantry, St. Mary's/Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, and tutoring many young people in the area.
Kathy was a remarkable self-taught seamstress and shared her love of sewing by making clothes and teaching others to sew. She helped many celebrate the most important day of their lives by designing and creating custom wedding gowns. She made, repaired, altered, and hemmed hundreds of costumes for the Rhinelander High School Drama Department.
She and Erik loved spending time together, visiting family and their old stomping grounds. She loved her family fiercely and was incredibly proud of her four kids and grandkids.
Kathy is survived by her children, Kristin (Alan) Higgins, Keri Lane (Jay Kellner), Keith (Gillian Silvertand) Larsen, Kim (Jason Hendricks) Larsen, and four grandchildren. She is survived by her brother, Bill (Brando Salvatierra) Bertagnoli, and Jean Ann (Bob) Schuerman, and several nieces, nephews, and their children. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022, at 11 a.m., at the Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church in Rhinelander. Fr. Chris Kemp will officiate. The family will receive friends for visitation from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in Kathy's memory and may be directed to her family or please direct gifts to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in her name.
Kathy loved doing kind things for other people and believed a pan of mound bars was the perfect thank you. Her family asks that you pay that forward and do something kind for someone in her honor.
